Wally Wapachee

In House Elder

Wally Abraham Wapachee's journey embodies a quest for balance between his Cree heritage and the opportunities offered by the modern world. Born and raised in Mistissini, surrounded by the beauty of the region and his grandparents' teachings, Wally's early years were deeply rooted in Cree traditions and the land. However, the imposition of Residential School in La Tuque marked the beginning of a new path, leading him to explore employment opportunities outside his community and eventually venturing into urban centres like Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto.

Despite facing challenges and systemic barriers, Wally's resilience and determination propelled him forward. From working odd jobs to pursuing higher education, his journey reflects a constant pursuit of knowledge and cultural enrichment. Through experiences such as volunteering with Operation Beaver and holding positions within his community, Wally found fulfillment in connecting with diverse cultures and giving back to his roots. His achievements, from becoming a midwife to winning a Canadian Juno award for music, showcase his multifaceted talents and unwavering commitment to his family and community. Ultimately, Wally's journey is a testament to finding meaning and peace by embracing his heritage, pursuing education, and cultivating a sense of belonging wherever life takes him.
